I talk a lot about the abundance mindset – the belief that life isn’t a zero-sum game. You don’t have to win by making someone else lose. That mindset is outdated - and it keeps people small. This week I’m reflecting on how regularly we miss this, especially when navigating tough issues or policy proposals. We rush to argue, to persuade, to be “right,” without first doing the one thing that actually moves people: listening. Chris Voss, former FBI negotiator, continues to shape my thinking. His concept of tactical empathy is simple but powerful: understand what the other person sees, feels, fears. Not to agree. Not to give in. Just to understand. Because when people feel heard, they’re more likely to collaborate. They open up, they start to trust. And that’s when change becomes possible. Whether you're in a boardroom, at the dinner table, or negotiating a high-stakes policy issue, the rules are the same: Understand First, Influence Second. ![]() I would like to personally invite you to join us on June 30th for our Annual Golf Classic, brought to you by Blaze Credit Union.
